Some thing(s)
Beeler Gallery, Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, Ohio 17 November 2022 - 24 February 2023
“. . . the occurrence of a word is the occurrence of an object whose placement always has a point, and whose point always lies before and beyond it.”
Stanley Cavell, The Senses of Walden, 1972
These images from my solo exhibition, Some thing(s), unfold a sampling of the pastel drawings, hand-stitched needlepoints, enameled steel panels and other objects in the show. Some thing(s) included, as well, an open classroom for community programs and my ongoing performance of “Reading the Daily News.”
Because I care more about how my artworks mean than what they mean, I typically choose words that don’t name objects. METAPHOR is, for example, a figure of speech. DARKNESS describes a condition. The color blue, though recognizable, is not a thing. MOBY DICK is the name of a symbol. NOW is the time.
Among the other works on view, I placed two monuments carved from stone, a flattened cigarette packet, and a discarded cardboard box. Just as every word is formed from the varied shapes of its individual characters, so these objects—whether set on the floor, pinned to a wall, or tucked into a corner—each shape common relations as a singular part to a whole.
